The Basic Neurocellular Patterns constitute the syntax of the movement language. We can understand them as the semantic building blocks for constructing the sentences and propositions of our action. The BNP are the foundation for the development of all perceptual relations, including those related to body image and spatial orientation, and for learning and communication.
The study of the BNP is core in Body-Mind Centering®: the study of movement from an evolutionary perspective. It is also closely related to the experiential study of all body systems (which are explored extensively in the Somatic Movement Education program).
The BNP have wide application in many fields, from the study and practice of movement to the expression and facilitation of psychophysical processes. Performed sequentially, the BNP can also provide a starting point for developing one’s own movement practice.
In this course we focus on:
- the exploration of the prevertebrate patterns: vibration, cellular, sponging, pulsation, mouthing, and prespinal
- the exploration of the vertebrate patterns: spinal, homologous, homolateral, and contralateral
- distinguishing and integrating the actions of yield, push, reach and pull
- combining the vertebrate patterns so to facilitate their integration
- facilitating developmental repatterning in oneself and others.
